Rules worth knowing before you sign
State-licensed GCs · Residential work over $75,000 and home improvement over $7,500 require State Licensing Board for Contractors credentials.
Deposits · Louisiana sets no specific statutory deposit cap for home-improvement work. A
common-sense ceiling is 10–15% up front — a contractor demanding half the contract
before starting is a red flag.
Lien waivers ·
In every state, unpaid subcontractors can generally place a lien on your home even
if you paid the GC. Collect lien waivers with each progress payment on larger jobs.
